Melissa Agard

Wisconsin State House

District 16

"As a mother of four, and a State Representative I have experienced firsthand the challenges of the current system. We must create a system that values motherhood rather than penalize it and I believe very much in the work being done by Vote Mama. I know that when we support mom’s who are running for office we all win."

State Representative Melissa Sargent was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and is a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Representative Sargent was first elected in November 2012 and is currently serving in her fourth term in the Wisconsin State Legislature. She represents the 48th Assembly District, which encompasses the east and north sides of the city of Madison and the village of Maple Bluff.

Representative Sargent is a strong progressive voice in the Wisconsin State Legislature. During her tenure, Representative Sargent has fought for legislation raising Wisconsin’s minimum wage, providing equitable access to menstrual hygiene products, legalizing marijuana, empowering survivors of sexual assault, protecting privacy rights, among many other important issues.

For the 2018-2019 legislative session, Representative Sargent serves on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, the Joint Committee on Information Policy and Technology, and the Assembly Committees on Mental Health, Small Business Development, Substance Abuse & Prevention, and Science & Technology.

A lifelong Madison resident, Representative Sargent is a single mom to four sons and lives on the city’s Northside.
